You'd probably be better off waiting for the $69.99 copy if you're looking to play next-gen.
THE FALCONEER 8K UPGRADE
NBA 2K21 is another game that isn't receiving much of a free upgrade path, as you'll only be getting an upgrade to the Xbox Series X copy if you own the $96 special edition copy of the game, the Mama Forever Edition.
THE FALCONEER 8K PS4
This is also the case with PS4 to the PS5 version. If you buy just the Xbox One version, you'll be required to pay an extra $10 to get access to the game on next-gen systems. Right now you have three options, the cross-gen bundle for $70, the Xbox One version for $60, and the Series X/S version for $70. You'll need to pay at least $70 to get access to the Xbox Series X version. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is one example, and an annoying one at that. Xbox One Games with a Paid Xbox Series X Upgrade PathYeah, it's a shame, but not all games have signed up to be part of Xbox Smart Delivery.

In fact, new Xbox games are still cross-generational. Microsoft is hammering home that Xbox One games will work on Series X and S, and Smart Delivery is just chosen phrase attached to it. You might be wondering, is this any different from PS5? Not really no, although it has been presented in a slightly less complicated fashion. If a game does have an Xbox Series X optimized version, then it will either be a part of Xbox Smart Delivery, meaning the upgrade is free, or there will be a fee to pay if the publisher has not signed up for Smart Delivery (i.e Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War). If a game isn't a part of Xbox Smart Delivery, it will still run backward-compatible on Xbox Series X. This is a free service and doesn't cost any extra.ĭo You Need to Pay for Both Xbox One and Xbox Series X Copies of Games?Quite simply, no.

THE FALCONEER 8K FULL
So when a game like Gears 5 or Assassin's Creed Valhalla is labeled as using Smart Delivery, that means that game is using the console's hardware to its full advantage. The upgrade system simply means that the game is taking full advantage of the new console's hardware, it has been optimized for use on Xbox Series X, or Series S if you're an all-digital user for example. This is not the same as backward compatibility, and Microsoft is insisting that all Xbox One games will be playable on the new console, alongside hundreds of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles.

Put simply, Smart Delivery is an upgrade system for Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S games. It's all part of its Xbox ecosystem, and Smart Delivery is just another part of the Xbox package.

What is Xbox Smart Delivery?Xbox loves to label things at the moment, Quick Resume, Game Pass, Cloud Gaming, and Smart Delivery.
